Northside-based musician Princessinit_ has been selected as a finalist in Brisbane City Council’s prestigious music mentorship program, The QUBE Effect.
The 12-month program aims to provide emerging artists with professional guidance and support from industry experts.
Princess said being named as a finalist was “a beautiful feeling”.
“I’m kind of overwhelmed in a good way,” she said. “It feels great to be given an opportunity like this. It’s not every day that you wake up and hear, ‘You’re a finalist’.”
Early influences
Born and raised in Australia with South Sudanese heritage, Princessinit_ began her musical journey at the age of 12 after being inspired by Michael Jackson.
“The way he told stories through R&B really pulled me in,” she said.
She added that her style had evolved over the years, influenced by Afrobeats artists like Ayra Starr, Tems, Rema and Bnxn.
“Afrobeats brought a whole new vibe for me and now I do a mix of genres like Afrobeats, soul, R&B, country, hip-hop, dancehall, pop and many more,” she said.
Her personal struggles have also deeply influenced her music.
“My music comes from everything I’ve been through in life,” she said. “It’s not always been easy but those tough moments taught me a lot about strength and resilience. Music became my way to express all of that, to turn what I’ve experienced into something positive.
“I want my music to connect with people, help them feel understood and remind them that no matter what life throws at you, you can keep going.”
As a finalist in The QUBE Effect, Princessinit_ will gain valuable industry insights and have the chance to film a music video for one of her songs.
“All I can say is that I’m very much locked in and you’ll see what I’m gonna do,” she said. “I don’t wanna spoil it for you, I want you to be captured by what you see and hear.”
Having performed at several major local events, Princess said she hoped to perform more across Australia and internationally, including at festivals.
“I’d like to collab with some big Australian artists like ONEFOUR, The Kid LAROI, but mainly the big Afrobeats artists Rema, Ayra Starr, Ruger, Bnxn and many more,” she said.
