All Saints Anglican Church in Chermside hopes to bring people together when it hosts a community car boot sale this month.
The free event on Saturday, 12 September will feature books, toys, plants, household goods and more, along with a sausage sizzle and Indian breakfast. Every purchase will help support All Saints’ community ministries, including the parish pantry, soup kitchen and op shop.
Volunteer Fay Nolan said the car boot sale was more about bringing the community together than raising funds.
“It’s an opportunity to bring people together, strengthen community connections, and create a place where everyone feels genuinely welcomed, valued, and at home,” Fay said. “If someone leaves with a bargain and a smile – and perhaps a new friendship – then we’ve achieved something truly worthwhile.”
The op shop, which is not normally open on Saturdays, will also welcome visitors during the event.
Supporting Community Ministries Year-Round
Op shop coordinator, Anthea Meadows, said the shop had become a place of refuge for some visitors, particularly because of its proximity to two major hospitals.
“The families and friends of patients visit, and we hear their stories, so we try to give comforting words and a prayer,” Anthea said. “A place where they can feel a sense of belonging so far from home.
“Hugs are given freely from our volunteers to visitors we know and do not know. One lady was looking lost after her purchase and said she was waiting for a hug as it would be her only physical contact for the week.”
The church’s community outreach also includes a soup kitchen and parish pantry, where volunteers provide practical support alongside companionship.
Volunteer Stephen Clarke said the soup kitchen was a place without judgment.
“We provide nourishment and comfort to countless individuals and families facing hardship – but more than that we try to create a sense of belonging, to make them feel part of the community,” Stephen said.
He said volunteers at the parish pantry always greeted clients with a welcoming smile.
“And even though our main reason in helping is to provide them with food, we do take time to listen to their stories and concerns, and provide a shoulder to cry on when necessary,” he said.
“When the clients ask us, we will pray with them in their time of need as well as providing them with much-needed food supplies. We accept them and they accept us; it’s great to be part of this community.”
Entry to the car boot sale is free. Those wishing to sell items from their car boot must register with the church office.
