Author, sports journalist and former Nine Network presenter Steve Haddan will meet local readers this month to discuss his latest book, The Greatest Game of All: The National Rugby League 1908-2025.
Steve will appear at Chermside Library on Tuesday, 22 September, as part of the Lord Mayor’s Writers in Residence series.
He said the book, which traces the history of the NSWRL and NRL across 117 seasons, took three years to write.
“I go through in the book the sequence of events that led me to love the game, and I will also share this with the audience at the event,” he said.
“There are a lot of remarkable people/characters who play this game, and you get stories from great pioneers and wonderful athletes who drew crowds to watch the game, went to war, went through the Depression, raised families.
“The whole book is story after story about the players and the competition. It’s written with the history of the game, the great players and the great controversies of the game.”
Why This Book Matters to Readers
Steve said he wrote the book because he knew people would enjoy it.
“When I was 10 years of age, I know it is a book I would have wanted to read,” he said.
“I’ve had people come up to me and say they have a kid who has never read a book in his life and he can’t put this one down. A lot of people don’t like to read, but they love to read a book about footy.”
