A local social club is giving mothers an opportunity to meet new people, make friends and enjoy regular outings.

Social Mums Club Chermside, Nundah and Surrounds organises several free and low-cost meet-ups each month for mothers of all ages and stages.

Franchise owner Jayne Beldrake said she bought the club to connect with other local mums and because “the world needs community now more than ever”.

“I believe it can help build and nurture real-life local communities, and as someone who is very values-driven, it’s important to me to contribute something to the world that moves it in a better direction,” Jayne said.

Social Mums Club began as a Facebook group started by Kirsty Foster in Wynnum during COVID to help local mothers connect. It has since expanded to clubs across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Melbourne.

There are no membership fees and most events are free, with attendees only paying for their own food and drinks or the cost of workshops. Local businesses sponsor the club to keep costs down for members.

Jayne said she loved meeting the women at each event.

“Everyone is so unique and it is such a privilege to hear all their incredible stories and about their lives,” she said. “I feel more alive and more connected as a human because it gets me off devices and out experiencing real life, face to face with other people.

“It’s also mind-blowing to me that no matter how different our lives seem on the surface, we all have these common bonds and can create such a meaningful connection and links.”

One local mum, Giovanna, said Jayne planned wonderful, baby-friendly activities that engaged their little ones, allowing the adults to chat and connect.

“From my very first meetup, the community welcomed us with open arms, making me feel completely at ease and supported during a time when motherhood felt overwhelming,” Giovanna said. “It is a safe, judgment-free space where I’ve found a real village, shared honest advice, and built meaningful friendships.”

Another mum, Anna, said when she visited the club for dinner and a chat it was “a wonderful opportunity to meet new people in the suburb and make new friends”, especially as someone who is “new to this country”.

Connect Over Brunch and Beyond

In September, the club will host brunch at Coco & Grove in Kedron and a social dinner at El Camino Cantina in Chermside. Jayne will also have a stall at Nundah Festival on Sunday, 13 September, where visitors can meet her and pick up a goodie bag.
