Fresh from sold-out performances across North America, Legends of Motown will make its Australian debut this month.
The tribute show will take the stage at Kedron-Wavell on Sunday, 22 February, delivering a night of nostalgia with hits from Marvin Gaye, The Supremes, The Temptations and more.
Behind the Show and the Music
Producer and founder of Legends of Motown, David Callender, said he hoped the audience would feel like they took a trip in a time machine.
“Hopefully, we will take them back to some of the best memories of their lives and most of all, we hope they will have new memories of this celebratory evening,” David said.
He said the show was inspired by another tribute performance where he portrayed Ray Charles in the first act, with a second act devoted to The Supremes.
“The music was so infectious and people always got up on their feet and sang along,” he said. “I realised the impact of Motown music right there and then, and I started thinking to myself that if I had or could find enough talented male singers, I could produce a show with the whole Motown songbook.”
The Australian performance of Legends of Motown features eight singers backed by a four-piece live band, with a setlist featuring classics like I Can’t Help Myself by Four Tops, which David said “always gets people on their feet”.
“Most of the songs we do were number one singles at some point, but besides being hits, I wanted to go with the songs that were the most fun and energetic, so I really just put together a list of songs that I would want to go see in a show,” he said.
“There’s not a single song in the set that isn’t one that people love – songs like My Girl, or I Can’t Help Myself, or Stop! In the Name of Love.
“Motown has an audience with an age range of enthusiasts from eight to 88, which we feel blessed to be able to connect with every time we do a show!”
He added that they were excited to be bringing the show to Australia.
“Every show we do is a celebration of perhaps the greatest music of all time,” he said. “It never gets old (even if we all do). We are just excited to be connecting with Australia for the first time, and we hope it is the beginning of many more Australian tours.”
