The Beams Road upgrade between Carselgrove Avenue and Handford Road has reached the halfway stage, with works continuing on one of Brisbane’s busiest northern transport corridors.

The project is aimed at improving traffic flow and safety along the route, which carries about 20,000 vehicles each day, while also expanding infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists.

Recent construction has focused on underground drainage works and the relocation of essential services. Crews have also completed widening works at the Cabbage Tree Creek crossing to accommodate four lanes of traffic, addressing a key congestion point along the corridor.

A 500-tonne crane was used to install precast culverts needed for the expanded crossing.

Infrastructure Improvements and Project Progress

The upgrade includes new shared pathways and a pedestrian underpass at Cabbage Tree Creek, designed to provide a separated crossing for pedestrians and cyclists and improve connections to the Cabbage Tree Creek Bikeway.

The first stage of the Beams Road upgrade, between Lacey Road and Balcara Avenue, was completed in early 2025. That stage included widened road sections, new traffic signals at Dorville Road and upgraded shared path links.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, said, “Reaching the halfway mark on the Beams Road upgrade is an exciting milestone for this project that will improve safety, boost capacity and ease congestion for Brisbane’s northside.”

The project is jointly funded by the Australian Government, which has committed $50 million, and Brisbane City Council through its Better Roads for Brisbane program. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2026.
