Local sustainability expert Jane Milburn OAM is set to lead a workshop where she will share tips on reducing fast fashion habits and creating a wardrobe that’s both stylish and eco-friendly.
Jane – an advocate for slow fashion and a published author – will host a free workshop at Chermside Library on Saturday, 6 June, exploring ethical clothing choices, the benefits of taking control of your wardrobe, and why natural fibres matter.
According to Jane, the Chermside Library session will be an inspiring talk that aims to motivate and empower people to take action within their own wardrobes.
“We all know that as a society we are drowning in clothes (for example, 200,000 tonnes to landfill each year in Australia), but often we feel we have nothing we want to wear because we’re not loving the items we already own,” she said.
Practical Steps Toward Slow Fashion
“We talk about the case for citizen behaviour change, then provide a ‘show and tell’ about simple, practical everyday actions we can take to reduce our material footprint.
“Such actions might be just washing clothes less often and spot cleaning, or lengthening/shortening hems or sleeves so they suit your personal shape and style.”
Jane founded Textile Beat in 2013, a purpose-driven business that encourages a creative approach to dressing, celebrates natural fibres, and promotes upcycling for pleasure, reward and sustainability. She is also the author of Slow Clothing: finding meaning in what we wear and a 2019 Churchill Fellow, researching how hands-on engagement with clothing can reduce textile waste and enhance wellbeing.
“We regenerate our agency around what we wear when we reactivate what was traditional knowledge of having a few simple stitching skills and the courage to buck trends,” she said.
“People often think you need a sewing machine to ‘sew’ when you can actually do a lot with just a needle and thread and sewing by hand. When we tweak our clothes to suit ourselves, it benefits our health and wellbeing: it can save us money, and we feel good doing it.”
