Australia’s newest supergroup MONSTR is preparing to bring a nostalgic acoustic experience to local audiences with a live tribute celebrating the iconic performances of MTV Unplugged.
On Saturday, 2 May, the band will take the stage at The Royal Hotel Nundah with a show reimagining some of the most famous moments from the television series that redefined live acoustic music.
MONSTR features a lineup of well-known Australian rock musicians, including Jason Singh, the frontman of multi-platinum band Taxiride. He is joined by bass player Stu Rudd, a founding member of The Superjesus; drummer Pete Drummond from Dragon; and guitarist Jimi Hocking of The Screaming Jets.
“It can be quite intimidating taking to the stage with people I have looked up to for many, many years,” Jason said. “All of us individually have been very successful in the business, but I find it elevates us all to a new level. A level that only a collaboration like this can achieve. It truly is something special.”
Originally airing from 1989 to 1999, MTV Unplugged showcased major music acts performing stripped-back acoustic versions of their songs. Many of the performances became legendary and were later released as albums, including sessions by Eric Clapton and Nirvana.
Some of the most memorable songs associated with the series include Losing My Religion by R.E.M., Don’t Look Back in Anger by Oasis, and The Man Who Sold the World by Nirvana, a song originally written by David Bowie.
“It’s incredible just how many different artists performed on the MTV Unplugged series,” Jason said. “It literally went on for more than 10 years.
“Everyone knows the really big records from Nirvana, Eric Clapton, Pearl Jam, Alanis Morissette, but there are some absolute gems that we play, Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, Eagles, and even Mariah Carey.”
After playing intimate theatres, festival tents and major Australian venues, The Best of MTV Unplugged national tour will head to a stage Jason knows well next month.
“I love The Royal,” he said. “I actually recommended us playing there with our agent because of every tour I’ve done, The Royal has always stood out as the one venue where everything comes together in the perfect way.”
Tickets start at $55.60. Get tickets here.
