The future of the former Toombul Shopping Centre appears to have been decided, with Brisbane City Council indicating its support for a mixed-use redevelopment. This proposed vision involves a combination of housing and retail, as well as open spaces aimed at addressing flooding concerns in the area.

Demolition of the once-popular shopping centre, which was severely damaged during the 2022 floods, is nearing completion. Landscaping works have commenced on site, which will include a small, temporary green space at the southern end of Widdop Street.

Mirvac’s Redevelopment Strategy

In a recent update, developer Mirvac stated that it had been working closely with authorities, including Council, over the past two years to establish parameters for the site’s future development. Key elements such as traffic management, the size and location of the bus interchange and flood mitigation solutions have been part of these discussions.

“This has been a complex process that has taken time to get right and is a big milestone in the potential redevelopment of the site,” Mirvac said in an email to residents.

“Now that we have Council support confirming what is permissible on the site, we are commencing discussions with a targeted group of potential partners, including capital and other delivery partners, to support the future redevelopment.

“Given the scale and size of the site, along with the current challenging construction environment, we believe this will be the fastest pathway to bring life back to Toombul.”
