Beneath the church hall at All Saints Anglican Church in Chermside, you’ll find an op shop with a variety of interesting items.

Fr. Daniel Jayaraj said the op shop’s popularity had grown over the four years it had been open, with many regulars browsing new stock and chatting with volunteers.

“As you walk inside, it strikes you as a shop a bit like an old curiosity shop welcoming you to seek a bargain and investigate all things on display,” Fr. Daniel said.

“There is a covered carport outside the entrance and here you can sort through hanging racks of all clothing items, ladies’, men’s and children’s shoes – mostly $3 to $5, also cheap luggage and other odds and ends, which will surprise you.”

The shop is staffed by volunteers, who recently helped a young girl find an outfit for a job interview.

“We searched with her and she found exactly the right items – a classical suit, blouse and shoes to match for a total of $12 and was so happy, she rang us the next day to tell us she had been given the job, which was a godsend to her to be able to earn money and help her family,” Fr. Daniel said.

The shop also offers designer clothing priced between $5 and $20, jewellery, bedding, formalwear, vases, dinnerware, books, games and more. You can also find homemade jams ($5), chutneys ($4), lemon butter ($7) and fresh honey.

“Our proceeds are put towards the welfare outreach we have for the community,” Fr. Daniel said.

To donate, visit the church parking area (behind the food van) during opening hours. Donations must be clean.
