Prepare for a fun-filled and informative day at the Brisbane Emergency Services Expo, where families can get hands-on tips and expert advice on weathering severe storms.

The free event is on at 7th Brigade Park in Chermside this month, delivered by Brisbane City Council and supported by the Queensland Government’s Get Ready Queensland program.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said that Brisbane’s subtropical climate contributed to our fantastic lifestyle, but when storm season rolled in, preparation was key.

“I encourage all those interested in receiving professional advice on how to prepare your home during storm season to head down to this great free expo in the suburbs,” he said.

Marchant Ward Councillor Danita Parry said Council was making sure locals had all the resources they needed to keep themselves and their homes safe.

“This free event is the perfect opportunity to start planning with the support of emergency service professionals, so that you can be ready for whatever the weather might be,” she said.

The event will feature food, live entertainment from Paw Patrol, performances from The QUBE Effect finalists, and kids’ activities like a jumping castle, an obstacle course and face painting.

Nadine Ramsay, SES Local Controller Brisbane City Council Resilience, said that SES teams would be on-site at the expo to offer advice.

“So, make sure you come over and have a chat,” Nadine said.

“The Brisbane Emergency Services Expo is a great opportunity to ask any questions you may have about how to be better prepared during storm season.”

She said that common questions about emergency preparation included: when should I clean my gutters? How do I prepare my yard for storm season? What do the SES do? When do I call the SES? Where and when can I access sandbags?

“If you can’t make it to the expo, there are a number of resources that Council provides residents to be prepared, including our free Brisbane Severe Weather Alert service and other helpful information on our website,” she said.

Council is also offering free green waste drop-off weekends at its Resource Recovery Centres (including at Nudgee Beach and Ferny Grove) on October 12-13 and November 9-10.
